The fear of flying course consists of two major parts, spread over two days.
Day one: theory
The first part of the course is theoretical. Experienced Brussels Airlines pilots give a detailed explanation of the many technical aspects of flying. You will learn all about the many noises you hear on board during the flight. This way you will know that nothing is “wrong” when you hear clicking, shifting or rattling noises next time you’re on a plane. After this explanation the pilot will take you on board of a parked airliner to further illustrate what you have learnt.
After the lunch break, a specialized psychologist-therapist will give you a better understanding of the nature and causes of you fear of flying.
At the end of day one we will teach you some breathing exercises that will help you to control your fear of flying.
Day two: practice
An essential element of the course is taking a short flight trip. You will board a commercial scheduled flight accompanied by a therapist and a crew that will take special account of your fear of flying. You will fly to a European destination and later on the same day you will fly back to Brussels.
The flight trip will be preceded by a collective briefing during which you and your fellow participants will rehearse the breathing exercises and will have a group discussion on the expectations and thoughts the participants have on the actual flight.
During the return flight the therapists and crew will see to it that you are ready to fly on your own in the future. This after all is the whole point of this course. To maximise the effect of this course it is very important that you fly again shortly after.
